In this episode of ‘Always Be Creating,’ Jake Lipman and Maria Maloney interview Tara Gadomski, a Sundance Knight Fellow, an actor, director, writer and BBC radio producer.

When the COVID-19 crisis struck, a number of Tara’s bookings were delayed or cancelled. So she found inspiration via the BBC’s Opportunities page, https://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/opportunities, in a call for shorts shot and set on Zoom. She wrote, “I See You Now,” a short about a father and daughter who struggle to connect. While her piece was not selected for further development by the BBC, Tara decided to go ahead and cast, direct, edit, and produce the short film on her own. It is making the rounds in several online film festivals, winning the “Best Coronavirus Diary Film Film” at the Brighton Rocks Festival.

Following this positive experience, Tara directed and produced a “quarantine teaser” for her full-length film, “The Natural Mother.” Listen to this episode to learn more about how she channels inspiration into action.

In this inaugural episode of Always Be Creating, co-hosts Jake Lipman and Maria Maloney talk about their artistic paths up to the present day, and how they’ve adapted as creative people in the time of COVID-19. While the pandemic has placed some limitations on how they express themselves, it has also led to new and surprising outlets.

For Maria, that’s meant taking various creative classes on Zoom, including filmmaking, which culminated with her making a short film, ‘Chicky.’ Meanwhile, Jake recently finished the first draft of a new play, ‘Little Faith,’ and she got her home podcasting set up in place to record this episode.

As they talk through their insecurities and frustrations with working on new things, they also realize the joy inherent to trying new artistic expressions.

Future episodes will feature interviews with other creative people, and how they’ve expanded their creative identity in the time of COVID-19.
